SB is a wonderful wine at this time of year both for its crisp refreshing promise of summer days to come as well as its affinity to summer bounty. It pairs happily with springtime asparagus and artichoke and is delicious with heirloom tomatoes too. Daily walks in our vineyard typically take us up into the hills behind our tasting room where our Sauvignon Blanc grows.
We love the fact that this grape's flavors so closely reflect its growing conditions and viticulture practices.Yorkville's estate grapes grow on benchlands in the Yorkville Highlands. There are gentle south facing slopes, plateaus and north facing hills as well as a steep terraces; wines range in age from 5 to 33 years and grapes are handpicked at dawn over many days. We have old cane pruned vines, middle aged vines trellised on a Geneva double curtain and, interspersed, some youngsters planted to replace the old vines that have done their job.
A bottle of our Sauvignon Blanc expresses each terrain; voluptuous fruit from the southern exposure, zippy citrus from the cooler exposures and keen aromatics from steep thin soils. The result is a complex and immensely satisfying wine.
Our S.B. vines are descendants of original cuttings in the 1880's of Sauvignon Blanc vines from the iconic Bordeaux vineyard Chateau d'Yquem.
Harvested on September 10th, the fruit arrived at the winery with a perfect balance of sugars and crisp acidity. As with all of our white wines, the grapes were crushed directly to the press, and cold settled for 24 hours before being transferred to 100% seasoned small oak barrels for fermentation and sur-lie ageing. Our 2014 vintage is 91% Sauvignon Blanc and 9% Semillon both from our Randle Hill Organic Vineyard.
