Harvest 2009 Begins in Yorkville

Deborah and Greg remove MOG (Material Other than Grapes); mainly leaves.

We started harvest with our Sauvignon Blanc on Sep. 28. Every harvest has its challenges. This year the sugar development is running late as we had a cool spring and then had several unprecedented strings of very hot days in Aug. and Sep. Grapes don't like 105 degrees any more than humans, and shut down. So we've got about 3 more busy weeks of picking. Oh, the pleasures of farming!

Monthly Special - Carmenere

One of the six noble red grapes of Bordeaux, Carmenere is a bold, often finicky grape which was thought lost after phylloxera, a devastating louse, ravaged French vineyards in the 1800s. We introduced our 2006 to our Hi-Rollr Wine Club members in the May shipment. The 2006 is just our second vintage of Carmenere, so we’re still learning a great deal about it. Last year it sold out in just a few months, likely because it is such a rare wine to find here in California (59 acres planted versus over 13,000 acres in Chile, having been transported there from Bordeaux during the 19th century). We think with this vintage we’ve made some good improvements. Already less than 100 cases remain. Regular price $28; this is guaranteed to be the best offer on the Carmenere while supplies last.
